During the week of August 7, 2012, the Ottawa Catholic School Board closed its elementary schools and cancelled its virtual learning program. On Monday, Hydro Ottawa reported that more than 180,000 customers were without power after a major storm. Affected residents can apply for financial assistance online or call 3-1-1 for help.
During the weekend, Hydro Ottawa told Mayor Watson and council that damage is “beyond comprehension.” Hydro Ottawa is taking a whole city approach in managing the damage. They say they are working to restore power as quickly as possible. In addition, they plan to get more people online throughout the day.

It is named after the French word for curtain. It incorporates several lakes and two rivers. It was designed for military use and has 47 locks. The canal is also used for commercial purposes.
During construction, over 1,000 workers died. The Rideau Canal is also home to several archaeological resources. The canal is maintained by Parks Canada.
The Rideau Canal has been called Canada’s national treasure. It is the best navigable waterway in North America. It is also Ontario’s first UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The Rideau Canal in Ottawa is used for both summer and winter activities. In the summer, the canal is lined with gardens and fall colours. In the winter, the canal is home to the world’s longest ice rink.
Originally known as Dow’s Great Swamp, Dow’s Lake is located in Ottawa. The lake was named after American-born settler Abraham Dow.
The lake is located just west of Bronson Avenue and south of Preston Street. Dow’s Lake is home to the Dominion Arboretum, Canada’s oldest arboretum. There are approximately 10,000 plants in the arboretum. Many of the trees are marked with aluminum plaques with identifying information.
The Dominion Arboretum is a great place for picnicking and enjoying the outdoors. The annual Canadian Tulip Festival is held in May and includes a blacklight installation to light up the tulips at night. The Bank of Canada Museum is also open in May and features the history of currency.
The Dominion Arboretum contains a variety of trees. There are also aluminum plaques that tell the story of the trees.
