Located in the city of Ottawa, Ontario, Laroche Park is a community park that has a lot to offer. It features a playground, baseball field, basketball court and splash pad. Located just south of the Ottawa River and close to the Bayview O-Train Station, Laroche Park is one of the oldest parks in Ottawa. Dedicated to sports and artifacts from the past, the park has undergone a makeover in recent years. A new fieldhouse is set to open next year, and a mural showcasing the park’s colourful past is set to debut in 2020.
While the project is not without its flaws, there is no denying that the renovation of Laroche Park is a laudable feat. This is the first time the city has tackled a site that dates back to the early 20th century. Thankfully, a small army of hardworking citizens has put forth the effort to bring this beloved public space back to its former glory.
Located in Ottawa’s south end, Laroche Park is one of the city’s oldest and has been a fixture in local culture for centuries. In the early 1800s, a Mason sawmill was based on the site, and today it’s a lumber mill, albeit one a bit more modest in size. In fact, part of the site has been used as a city dump for years, but a recent discovery has led to a new chapter in the history books.
The Laroche Park rebirth commenced last year. The rebirth is a collaboration between the City of Ottawa, Ottawa Public Schools, the Kitchissippi Chamber of Commerce and the Mechanicsville Residents Association. It’s a major undertaking whose main tenets are to re-imagine the park and rehabilitate the buildings that surround it.
During the early years of the twentieth century, typhoid epidemics plagued all major Canadian cities. In Ottawa, the disease claimed twenty lives each year. In Toronto, the number of victims was a whopping eighty-seven. In September and October of 1912, another twenty-four died.
Typhoid fever is caused by the Salmonella typhi bacteria, which contaminate water and food. People who travel to an endemic area usually contract the disease, and can spread it to others.
